Dynamic Roof
This project draws inspirations from analytical research on the Great Eastern Hall of Foguang Monastery (佛光寺东大殿), a palatial-style wooden building from the Tang Dynasty (618–907 CE). We have discovered a unique proportional principle in the sectional view of the hall’s roof structure, which is based on a rhomboid grid. This traditional roof structure has been adapted to recreate the dynamic nature of traditional Chinese architecture. Our new structure, named 'Dynamic Roof,' is constructed using modular woodblocks, enabling the roof to either expand or contract to allow for varying spans. The design of these blocks is inspired by the dougong (æ–—æ ±) bracket set, an iconic element in Chinese architecture that connects pillars to beams. This design not only reflects the historical essence of Chinese architectural principles but also introduces adaptability and scalability into modern architectural practices. Created by Yuhan Wang.
